Airactivities - Learn To Fly

Learn To Fly

Currently SAAV does not offers Pilot Training. However by registering your interest you will assist in planning for the future when we will again offer flight training to Venturers, Rovers or Leaders over the age of 16 years, see links below.

Venturers should see information about Scouts NSW Air Venture Camps on the Venturer and Queen Scout Awards page.

Please register your interest for a trial instructional flight with the Student Pilot Co-ordinator by email: learntofly.airactivities@vicscouts.asn.au

Pilot training will be delivered through one of our flight training partners, usually from Moorabbin Aerodrome on Saturdays, Sundays and, by prior arrangement, on some weekdays. All training is provided by fully qualified flying instructors and can be progressed from Student License level through Recreational Pilot Licence, to Private Licence standard.

SAAV uses a Piper Warriors, single-engine aircraft for pilot training. It is a reliable and economical aircraft. We use Scout flying instructors who volunteer their time to provide an excellent standard in pilot training.

Flying is fun, but it does have its demands. It is necessary to train to a high standard and SAAV follows a strict training syllabus that has been established by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). The syllabus involves both ground based and in-air exercises that gets you flying hands-on straight away. Experience is the best teacher and flying training is designed to give you the necessary experience to cope with the demands of flying. Our aim is not just to train pilots to pass their tests, but to train pilots who will be safe and competent throughout their flying activities.

Cessna Training

No formal educational qualifications are required to learn to fly but you must:

  • Be able to read, write and speak the English language
  • Be 16 years or older
  • Pass a Class 2 aviation medical examination by an approved Designated Aviation Medical Examiner
  • Be an active and registered member of Scouts Australia

No previous experience in aviation is necessary to commence flying training.

The cost to registered members of the Scout Association is substantially less than the amount that would be charged by any of the pilot training schools around Melbourne because we do not have salaries to pay. Again, due to the ever-fluctuating cost of aviation fuel, we will provide a cost estimate upon inquiry. You can learn at your own pace and according to your own budget.

An Application to Commence Flying Training can obtained from us. Once an application is made, we will arrange for you to visit us at Moorabbin Airport and have a discussion with our Chief Flying Instructor. This will be followed by a trial instructional flight lasting around 30 minutes. This flight will give you the opportunity to take hold of the controls and see if you want to pursue flying.

For further information on learning to fly with SAAV please contact the Student Pilot Co-ordinator by email: learntofly.airactivities@vicscouts.asn.au  and also check the Downloads and Links page for further documents for prospective pilots.
