What Am I Allowed To Do?

General Canoe and Kayak Activities

What Can we do?

Joeys and Cubs

Can gain approval from their Group Leader to.

  •  Can paddle a Craft with a adult (or a youth member who has level 2 (Flatwater)) on Sheltered Water (Small Lake less than 1000 square meters) under supervision of a wood badged leader who has the means to effect a rescue provided that all the safety requirements and procedures for a swimming activity are followed* * Procedures for a swimming activity are found in the National Policy and Rules, R12.  (you will need to go to Scouts Australia website www.scouts.com.au to access this policy)

 Scouts and Venturers (Without Qualification)

Can gain approval from their Group Leader to.

  • Can paddle a Craft on (Small Lake less than 1000 square meters) Sheltered Water under supervision of a wood badged leader who has the means to effect a rescue provided that all the safety requirements and procedures for a swimming activity are followed* * Procedures for a swimming activity are found in the National Policy and Rules, R12.  (you will need to go to Scouts Australia website www.scouts.com.au to access this policy)

  • Can paddle a sit on top Craft at a patrolled beach under supervision of a wood badged leader on shore.

  • Can participate in a Flat Water (level 2)  course

  • Can be guided on Flat Water

  • Can be guided on Grade 2 White Water or Level 2 Sea/Surf on a sit on top or self-bailing craft

Rovers and leaders (Without Qualification)

Can gain approval from their Group Leader to.

  • Can paddle a Craft on (Small Lake less than 1000 square meters) sheltered Water

  • Can paddle a sit on top Craft at a patrolled beach under supervision another responsible adult on shore.

  • Can be guided on Flat Water

  • Can be guided on Grade 2 White Water or Level 2 Sea/Surf on a sit on top or self-bailing craft

  • Can participate in a Flat Water Course

Flat Water Canoe and Kayak

Can gain approval from the state leader canoeing (or their delegate)  to.

  • Can paddle the craft in which they are trained on Flat Undemanding Water (Including Rivers) with people of the same or higher qualification

  • Can be guided on up to Grade 2 White Water or Sheltered Sea/Surf in the craft in which they are trained

  • Can be guided on Grade 3 White Water or Level 3 Surf on a sit on top or self-bailing craft

  • Can participate in a level 2 Additional course or Level 2 Sea Kayak Course

White Water Canoe and Kayak

Can gain approval from the state leader canoeing (or their delegate)  to.

  • Can paddle the craft in which they are trained on Level 2 White Water with people of the same or higher qualification

  • Can be guided on Level 3 White Water in the craft in which they were trained

  • (If Kayak) Can be guided on Level 3 Sea/surf in a kayak.

Sea Kayak

Can gain approval from the state leader canoeing (or their delegate)  to.

  • Can paddle the craft in which they are trained on Level 2 Sea/Surf with people of the same or higher qualification

  • Can be guided on Level 3 Sea/Surf in the craft in which they were trained

All Guided Canoe and Kayak Activities

All guided Canoe/Kayak activities will be run by appropriately qualified Activity Guides.

Canoe and Kayak Training

Only appropriately qualified and accredited Canoe/Kayak Leaders are permitted to train others.

In this regard, only training outcomes and qualifications that appear on the Victorian Branch Membership database will be recognised for this purpose. 

You may apply for R0P/RCC if you hold a qualification outside of Scouting.

Minimum Standards of Attire

The Victorian Branch Canoeing Team has prescribed the following as representing the  minimum standard of attire for all members participating in Canoe and Kayak activities.

While on the water all such participants must wear an

An Appropriately fitted life jacket (type 2 or 3 are preferred) ; 

Suitable enclosing footwear;

A canoeing helmet is recommended on all canoeing activities, it is mandatory on moving water to wear a canoeing helmet*

(If on flat undemanding water it is deemed that the risk of sun exposure is to high by the Leader In Charge, Sun hat will be warn instead of helmet*)
