Operation CacheOn the 1st April 2012 at Gilwell Park in Gembrook, “Operation Cache” took place.

This was the second geocaching event that has been run, with the first event held  in 2011 at Tirhatuan Park, Dandenong with 7 teams participating.

Numbers increased for the 2012 event with 10 Scout teams, 3 Cub teams and 3 Leader teams. This included 16 Cubs from 1st Dromana Sea Scouts and 2nd Springvale as well as 50 Scouts from 1st Mornington, 1st Sorrento Sea Scouts, 2nd Springvale, 2nd Prahran, Rowville, 1st Yinnar/ Churchill and Narre Warren.

The even was run by a dedicated committee of 5 leaders from various sections of the Scouting movement who helped plan, organise, promote and run Operation Cache.Operation Cache

Everyone had a lot of fun, some had done Geocaching before, others trying it for the first time,  but all were catered for with 20 caches hidden all over Gilwell Park, some easy, other ones more difficult.

Each team were given a printed sheet with their co – ordinates and had to locate as many as possible. Inside each cache was a QR code which they scanned onto a Smartphone or IPod and the QR codes had hidden directions to a mystery cache. This was new technology this year and worked really well.

All of the teams that attended used GPS’s and even those that had not used them in the past had no problem, with a quick tutorial given to new people before the commencement of the activity. The geocaching team have a supply of GPS’s, so even those who had not seen or used one before could have a go at it.Operation Cache

The four hour competition finished off with a BBQ lunch and the winners and perpetual trophies were handed out to the winning teams.

The Cubs section was won by 2nd Springvale, the winning Scout team was 1st Mornington and the winning Leader team was 2nd Prahran/ Mornington DL.

Next years event is scheduled for the 28th April probably at Braeside Park. Keep an eye open for the information and get your teams in as it’s going to be bigger and better again. We look forward to seeing you all there.
