Try to imagine driving a billy cart down a waterslide at 130 kph. This is how Heath Spence, Queen Scout, describes being the driver of the Australian 2- and 4-man Bob Sled Team in the recent Olympic Games at Sochi, in Russia.
Heath was a Cub and Scout at 1st Hallam and a Venturer with the District Unit Wundarra and also 7th Doveton. He is a Queen's Scout and also in Rovers.
Heath started his sledding as a brakeman and later switched to driver. To get to Sochi, he had to be his own fundraiser, even selling some of his own possessions! The 4-man team improved their world ranking by seven positions to finish 22nd. And this was using a borrowed sled, against teams with millions of dollars in support, training and state-of-the-art equipment behind them! Heath is already looking at the next Winter Olympics, and we wish him all the best for them, as well as a hearty congratulations on what he has achieved so far.
As far as we know, Heath is Scouting's first Winter Olympian. You can read about him and see more information about Heath and the rest of our Bob sled teams here.
