Rock Climbing Qualifications

It is the policy of the Branch Rock Climbing Council (BRCC) that its rock-climbing activities shall be conducted within two separate climbing classifications under the leadership of appropriately qualified and experienced activity personnel whose competency to lead at various levels has been constantly reviewed against nationally set (SRO) standards. These standards are list below:

1. Top Rope Climber Certificate (code CLM-591)

  • May assist with a top rope activity under supervisions of a Rock Climbing Activity Guide or Rock Climbing Activity Leader.

2. Lead Rock Climber Certificate (code CLM-592)

  • May lead rock climbs unsupervised with other rock climbers holding a Lead Rock Climber or higher certificate and may assist on a Lead Climbing activity with the supervision of a Rock Climbing Activity Leader or Guide.

3. Rock Climbing Activity Guide

  • May organise, instruct and lead climb on rock climbing activities under the BRCC guidelines
  • Must have completed a course in Cliff Rescue Technique (code CLM-593)
  • Must have completed the Activity Guide
  • Must have complete Training of Trainers - Training Methods

4. Rock Climbing Activity Leader

  • May organise, instruct and lead climb on rock climbing activities under the BRCC guidelines
  • Must have completed the Basic Activity Guide training including Training Methods and Apply First Aid
  • Must have completed Advanced Activity Instructor training and achieved Activity Woodbadge
  • Must have completed Training of Trainers - Assessor

The levels of qualification are available to all adult Leaders and Rovers. Venturers are able to qualify as Lead Rock Climber.

Please note: It is Branch policy that all activity leaders must hold a Level 2 First Aid certificate or higher

Please note: Rock climbing qualifications issued by non-Scouting bodies or by other State Branches of the Scout Association of Australia, may only be used within the Victorian Branch in the conduct of rock climbing activities with the prior written approval of the Branch Rock Climbing Council. Should doubt exist concerning a person's qualifications please refer the matter the the Branch Rock Climbing Council.
